Welcome to our 5th edition of "Izindaba"
Dear Friends,
It seems as if our cold winter's days are drawing to an end … or at least we can be hopeful! South Africa has seen some really cold days of late, with snow falling in the most unusual of places - even in areas of Gauteng (Johannesburg).
For those of you going on a Safari in Southern Africa during the next two months, it is still advisable to take warm clothes with you, especially for those early morning and evening safari game drives … remember "jeans" retain the cold, so it'll be best to pack cotton long pants.
We would like to thank you all for keeping in touch and hope you enjoy reading this month's newsletter.
All the best,

Please contact Wendy should you wish to include any special information relevant to the Tourism & Hospitality Industry, in our monthly newsletter - "Izindaba" - Thank you!

BOOK REVIEW
The exciting 1st Edition of "Discovering Mozambique And The Maputo Corridor", by Molly Joyce and her daughter Susan Joyce, is due to be released in September 2007.
A complete 264 page guide book on Mozambique and the Maputo Corridor, inclusive of colour photographs and maps too. We wish Molly and her team at Discovering Africa all the very best, with this wonderful guide book on Mozambique, published by Boraro Publishers, with their first print run of 3000 copies.
We met Molly some years ago when she was on tour through Botswana writing one of her first editions of Discovering Botswana, and have been in contact ever since … seeing each other at international trade shows and catching up by e-mail too. We recently spent time with Molly at Indaba in May and continue to "nag" our great friend for a "story book" on her travels … she has traveled so far and wide over Southern Africa and has such amazing stories to tell! Her Discovering Africa Series includes Botswana, Zambia, Namibia & Mozambique.
Should you wish to purchase one, or all, of the Discovering Africa Series, or if you have an establishment in one of the countries in the series and would like to advertise in the respective countries guide book, through Discovering Africa, kindly contact Wendy (wendy@dutoittmcs.co.za) for further information and assistance. |

Did you know?
The name giraffe appears to have its origin in the Arabic word xirapha, one who walks swiftly. The specific name camelopardalis refers to their size and marking, as being "big as a camel" and "spotted like a leopard"!

The World's Largest Game Park Is Planned For Southern Africa
The planned conservation area will straddle the borders of Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe, forming the world's largest park by merging five national parks into one mega conservation area. The proposed "Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Park" will cost an estimated US$100m to initiate and received a major boost in July 2007, when three international organizations pledged nine million euros for the development of preparatory projects and the establishment of a permanent secretariat. It is hoped the park will bring in tourists with attractions such as the Victoria Falls, Okavango swamps, Chobe National Park and Caprivi Strip enveloped in the area. The officials believe it will also help regional tourism ahead of the 2010 World Cup taking place in South Africa, as well as job creation in the five countries. A meeting was held in Botswana's capital Gaborone, a week ago, for the five environmental ministers and conservationists from Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe to deliberate on the memorandum of understanding signed in Zimbabwe last year.

du Toit Family News
We asked ourselves, a few times during the last six weeks, if it was really necessary to move from the "bush" to the city, as our primary reason for moving was to give our children a good, well rounded, education.
The Teachers Union strike in South Africa last month, saw the closure of many schools in South Africa, including the school the girls' attend, due to security reasons (not due to any fault of our school teachers who were all willing to work) for a period of nearly 4 weeks!
The two weeks Winter School holidays followed the strike, with the girl's starting school again on the 16th July. We are thankful that they are only in Junior School and not finishing High School this year … to all those students writing their final exams this year - good luck with your studies!

Have You Registered Your Employee's for UIF?
South African employers in the hospitality industry were given an extended deadline to submit their updated employee's information. The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) extended the deadline to Saturday the 8th July 2007.
The Department of Labour said in a statement that employers are urged to submit details of their employees in line with the latest minimum wages for the industry, which came into effect at the beginning of this month.
"In terms of the new Sectoral Determination for the hospitality sector, employers with less than 10 employees are now required to pay a minimum wage of R1 480 per month, while those with more than 10 employees are required to pay R1 650 per month."
UIF spokesperson, Kgomotso Sebetso, said "We also call upon employers to ensure their businesses and workers are registered with the fund. If you have workers employed for 24 hours or more per month, there is no excuse for failure to register with the UIF".
UIF has extended its call centre operating hours. The call centre, which can be reached on 012 337 1680, will now remain open from 7:30am until 6pm on weekdays.

Mozambican Roads receive a $100 million in credit from the World Bank
Earlier this month the World Bank agreed to give Mozambique $100 million in credit to help upgrade its road network, most of which had been damaged and neglected during the civil war which ended in 1992.
Michael Baxter, the Bank's director for Mozambique, Zambia & Zimbabwe said that Mozambique will be exempt from interest and will have 40 years to pay back the funds to the World Bank's International Development Association.
The Mozambican government sees the construction and modernization of roads and bridges in its country as key to boost economic growth in the Southern African nation, as it relies on agriculture and tourism for the bulk of its foreign exchange earnings.
The improved roads could allow Mozambique to lure foreign tourists who visit South Africa for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, as the capital Maputo is only a few hours drive from Nelspruit, one of the host cities for the tournament.
